The reel is what makes a cover get used
A solar cover on a mid-size pool is 400 to 800 square feet of wet film. Folding that by hand takes two people and several minutes, and it gets dragged across the deck in the process. Nobody does it twice a day for a season.
On a reel, the same cover comes off in under a minute by cranking a handle, and it stores rolled rather than creased. That is the whole argument: the reel is not a convenience accessory, it is what converts a cover from a good intention into a thing you actually use - and it roughly doubles the cover's life by keeping it off the concrete.
Three different products share the name
| Type | Mounts to | Typical width range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inground deck reel | The deck, on wheels or fixed feet | 14-21 ft on the models here | Rolls along the deck or parks at one end |
| Above-ground wall reel | The pool's top rail or its own frame | Up to 21 ft on the models here | Lift-and-swing designs pivot out of the way |
| Frame-pool reel | The pool's own frame | 9-16 ft | Made by the pool maker for its own pools |
These are not interchangeable. An inground deck reel has nothing to bolt to on an above-ground pool, and an above-ground wall reel has nothing to grip on a concrete deck.
How we compared them
- The stated width range. This is the specification, and every reel here publishes one except the cheapest.
- What is in the box. Some reels ship without tubes; all of them ship without the cover.
- Material and corrosion resistance. A reel lives outdoors in a chlorine atmosphere for years.
- Whether one person can work it. Two of these state one-person operation outright, which is the honest test of a reel's design.
What each reel states
| Reel | Pool type | Stated width | Build | In the box |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VINGLI 18 ft | Inground | 14-18 ft | 3-section aluminum, telescopic lock | Reel and straps; ships in several boxes |
| Doheny's Premium Stainless | Inground | Up to 18 ft | Stainless rolling base, aluminum tubes | Reel; cover not included |
| Sun2Solar Above-Ground | Above-ground round or oval | Up to 21 ft | Plastic and aluminum, lift-and-swing | Reel and all hardware; no cover |
| Swimline Hydrotools 52000 | Above-ground | Not stated | Non-corrosive, socket-mountable | Reel and straps; tube kits sold separately |
| Intex 28051E | Intex rectangular frame | 9-16 ft | Not stated | Reel only; no cover |
The last column is where the money hides. Swimline's reel is half the price of the others and its listing states the tube kits that set its length are sold separately - so the shelf price is not the price of a working reel.
Measure the width, not the length
A reel spans the narrow dimension of the pool and rolls the cover along the long one. A 16 x 32 ft pool needs a reel rated for 16 ft, not 32.
Buy to the rating rather than near it. A reel at full stretch flexes in the middle, the cover rolls unevenly, and the tube sags - which is the complaint behind most one-star reel reviews. VINGLI states a lockable telescopic tube specifically to stop that shaking, and Doheny's sells progressively heavier bases for the same reason.
Aluminum or stainless
Both resist a chlorine atmosphere far better than plain steel, and both appear on the reels here. The difference is stiffness and mass rather than corrosion.
Doheny's states a weather-resistant stainless rolling base with a large turning wheel, and positions its aluminum reels below it in the same range. That is a reasonable summary of the trade: stainless for a reel that lives on the deck year-round and gets moved often, aluminum for one that is lighter to reposition and cheaper to replace.
For an above-ground pool the question rarely comes up, because those reels are plastic and aluminum by design - they mount to a pool wall that cannot carry much weight.
Assembly is a real afternoon
Every reel here arrives flat-packed, and the aluminum inground reels arrive in more than one box - VINGLI's listing warns about it specifically, because the tubes are shipped separately to avoid transit damage.
Plan for an hour or two, a second pair of hands for the tube sections, and a level patch of deck. Sockets for a socket-mounted above-ground reel may need drilling into the top rail, which is permanent - measure twice.
The picks

Top pick - An inground pool up to 18 ft wide
VINGLI Pool Cover Reel for In-Ground Pools, 18 ft
The reel most inground pools need: aluminum, width-adjustable, and rated to the span it actually has to carry.
The published figure
Listing states a 3-section aluminum tube reel with lockable telescopic adjustment, for 14-18 ft wide inground pools
VINGLI states three-section aluminum tubes with a lockable telescopic adjustment, sized for inground pools 14 to 18 ft wide, and states the lock keeps the tube from shaking while you crank.
The listing states an embedded strap link design for a stronger, steadier pull, and rust-resistant, maintenance-free construction.
It ships in separate packages to avoid transit damage, per the listing - worth knowing before you conclude half the order is missing.
What it does well
- Width-adjustable across 14-18 ft
- Aluminum tube, stated rust resistant
- Telescopic lock stated to stop tube flex
What it costs you
- Arrives in multiple boxes, which reads as a missing delivery
- Assembly is a real job, not a five-minute one
- No stated weight rating for the cover it carries
Skip it if your pool is wider than 18 ft. Buy the reel rated for your span, not the closest one.

Pick 2 - A permanent reel on a deck
Doheny's In-Ground Solar Cover Reel System, Premium Stainless Steel
The heavy option. Stainless base, large turning wheel, and a build aimed at staying on the deck for years rather than seasons.
The published figure
Listing states a stainless rolling base with adjustable-width aluminum tubes, for pools up to 18 ft wide, one-person operation
Doheny's states a weather-resistant stainless steel rolling base, a large turning wheel and adjustable-width aluminum tubes, for pools up to 18 ft wide.
The listing states all styles are designed for one person to operate and are built from non-corrosive materials - the aluminum versions sit below this one, and an electric auto-reel sits above it.
It costs roughly twice the aluminum reels here, which is the trade for the base and the wheel rather than for any difference in what it rolls up.
What it does well
- Stainless rolling base, stated weather resistant
- Large turning wheel, stated one-person operation
- Adjustable-width tubes
What it costs you
- Around twice the price of the aluminum reels
- Capped at 18 ft wide in this configuration
- Heavy enough that repositioning it is a two-person job
Skip it if the reel will live in a shed between seasons. The stainless base is for a reel that stays out.

Pick 3 - Round or oval above-ground pools up to 21 ft
Sun2Solar Solar Cover Reel System for Above-Ground Pools
Built for the above-ground case the inground reels ignore, and it states the one thing that matters: one person can work it.
The published figure
Listing states it fits round above-ground pools up to 21 ft wide, one-person operation, three telescopic aluminum poles
Sun2Solar states the reel fits round above-ground pools up to 21 ft wide and is designed for one-person operation with a steering-wheel style handle.
The listing states lightweight non-corrosive plastic and sturdy aluminum tubing, with a lift-and-swing design so the reel pivots away or comes off before swimming.
All attachment hardware is stated to be included, and the solar cover is explicitly not included.
What it does well
- Stated one-person operation
- Lift-and-swing design to move it out of the way
- All mounting hardware stated included
What it costs you
- Cover not included
- Capped at 21 ft wide
- Plastic-and-aluminum build is lighter duty than a stainless system
Skip it if your pool is inground. This mounts to an above-ground wall.

Pick 4 - The cheapest working above-ground reel
Swimline Hydrotools Essential 52000 Above Ground Solar Reel System
Half the price of the other above-ground reels, and the reason is in the listing: the tube kits that set the length are sold separately.
The published figure
Listing states socket-mountable, non-corrosive construction, adaptable with tube kits sold separately
Swimline states heavy-duty non-corrosive construction and a socket-mountable design for straightforward installation.
The important line is the compatibility one: the reel is adaptable with various tube kits, sold separately, that set its length to match your pool and cover. Budget for those before comparing prices.
Straps and attachment hardware for the blanket are stated to be included.
What it does well
- Lowest price of the reels here
- Socket-mountable, stated simple installation
- Straps and hardware included
What it costs you
- Tube kits sold separately, so the sticker price is not the whole cost
- No stated pool width range
- Lighter duty than the aluminum systems
Skip it if you want one box that contains everything. This one deliberately does not.

Pick 5 - Intex rectangular frame pools, 9-16 ft wide
Intex Solar Cover Reel, 28051E
The reel for the pools nobody else makes a reel for. Narrow, specific, and it says so.
The published figure
Listing states it suits rectangular frame pools 9-16 ft wide; reel only, cover not included
Intex states the reel suits rectangular frame pools from 9 to 16 ft wide, and that it is easy to install and use.
The listing is explicit that this is the reel only and the solar cover is not included, which is the single most common surprise when buying reels.
There is no published weight rating or tube diameter, so treat it as matched to Intex's own covers rather than to a heavy 16 mil blanket.
What it does well
- Fits narrow rectangular frame pools
- Sold and shipped by Amazon
- Simple install, per the listing
What it costs you
- Cover not included
- No weight rating or tube spec published
- Narrow width range rules out most inground pools
Skip it if your pool is wider than 16 ft. The range is stated and it is narrow.

Who should not buy one
- Anyone with a small pool. Under about 300 sq ft a cover folds by hand in a couple of minutes, and a reel is deck clutter.
- Anyone whose cover only comes off a few times a season. The reel earns its place on a pool used daily.
- Anyone using a mesh safety cover for winter. Those are anchored and tensioned, not rolled - best winter pool cover covers that category.
- Anyone without the deck space. A reel parked at the shallow end needs a clear run and a place to live that is not the middle of the walkway.
