Cloudy Water

Cloudy Water

Six causes look identical from the deck. Two of them get worse if you reach for a bottle first, which is why this section starts with a diagnosis.

The ten-minute diagnosis

Cloudy water is a symptom. Adding a clarifier to a pool whose actual problem is a clogged filter or a pH of 8.2 wastes the bottle and leaves the cause in place, which is why it comes back a week later.

Start with why is my pool cloudy. It walks the six causes in the order that costs you least to check.

The six causes, at a glance

What makes a pool cloudy, and what actually fixes each one
CauseThe tellThe fixDoes clarifier help?
Filter cannot keep upPressure high, or run time short, or media overdueClean or replace the media; run the pump longerOnly after the filter is working
High pH or alkalinitypH above 7.8, alkalinity above 120 ppm; often with scaleRebalance - the cloudiness usually clears on its ownNo
Dead algae after a shockGray rather than white haze, following a green episodeFilter continuously, then flocculantYes, slowly - flocculant is faster
Swimmer load, oils and sunscreenCloudy after a busy weekend; sometimes foamShock, then a chitosan clarifierYes
Fine particulate below the filter's ratingPersistent haze with everything else in rangeClarifier to make it catchableYes - this is exactly its job
High calcium hardnessHard fill water, above roughly 400 ppm calcium, scale at the waterlinePartial drain and refillNo

Clarifier and flocculant do opposite things

This is the single most useful distinction in the section, and the aisle does nothing to explain it. A clarifier clumps fine particles together until they are large enough for your filter to catch, so the filter removes them. A flocculant clumps them together until they are heavy enough to sink, so you vacuum them out - to waste, not through the filter.

One works with your filtration and takes a day or two. The other bypasses your filtration and works overnight but needs a multiport valve with a waste setting and costs you several inches of water. Full comparison: clarifier vs flocculant.

If the pool was green last week

Then this is almost certainly dead algae, and it means the shock worked. It is the correct outcome of killing a bloom and it looks exactly like a failure, which is why people re-shock at this point and make no progress. Read cloudy pool water after shock.

Why Is My Pool Cloudy?

Check filtration, then chemistry, then everything else. Two of the six causes get worse if you add a chemical first.

Questions people actually ask

How long does it take to clear cloudy pool water?
With a working filter and the cause corrected, 24 to 48 hours of continuous filtration. A flocculant plus vacuum-to-waste does it overnight. Anything longer than about three days means the cause has not actually been fixed, only treated.
Is it safe to swim in cloudy pool water?
If you cannot see the bottom of the deep end, no - not because of the cloudiness itself but because a swimmer in difficulty becomes invisible. Beyond visibility, it depends entirely on the cause: high pH is a comfort problem, dead algae is not a hazard, and an unsanitized pool is.
Will a clarifier fix cloudy water?
Only if the cause is fine particulate or oils that your filter cannot catch. It does nothing for high pH, high calcium or a clogged filter. Diagnose first - clarifier fixes two of the six common causes.
Why is my pool cloudy but the chlorine is fine?
Because chlorine is not the usual cause. In order of likelihood: filtration, pH or alkalinity out of range, and fine particulate below the filter's rating. All three are perfectly compatible with a normal chlorine reading.

Why there is nothing to buy here: Cloudy water has six causes and only three of them are solved by buying something. The diagnostic guides below come first deliberately; the products sit on the two roundups in this section, one click away.
