Two problems, two treatments

Filter media collects two entirely different things, and almost everyone only ever addresses one of them.

If ignoredFilter clogsFilter glazes and water bypasses the pleats

Stage one: the rinse

  1. **Shut the pump off and release the pressure** at the air relief valve before opening anything. This is not optional - a pressurized housing is genuinely dangerous.
  2. **Note the pressure reading before you start,** so you can compare afterwards.
  3. **Lift the elements out** and stand them somewhere they can drain.
  4. **Rinse between the pleats, not across them.** Direct the water down into each fold and flush along it. A wide fan aimed at the fabric drives debris deeper in - which is the single most common mistake here.
  5. **Work top to bottom,** all the way around, so what you dislodge runs away rather than into the pleat below.
  6. **Inspect while it is clean.** Torn pleats, a soft or collapsed core, or cracked end caps mean replacement rather than cleaning.

A cleaning wand makes this considerably faster. It puts narrow jets into the pleat instead of a fan across it, which is exactly the technique that matters, and it stops you soaking yourself.

Stage two: the soak

Do this when a rinse alone no longer brings the pressure back near its clean reading, or when flow feels low despite a cartridge that looks fine.

  1. Rinse the debris off first. Soaking a cartridge covered in leaves wastes the solution on the wrong problem.
  2. Mix the enzyme cleaner per its label in a tub large enough to submerge the element completely.
  3. Leave it overnight. This is not a step to rush - the enzymes need hours.
  4. Rinse thoroughly afterwards, so no cleaner goes back into the pool.
  5. Reinstall and read the pressure gauge. **This is the test.** Back near the clean reading means the cartridge had life left in it. Still high means the media is genuinely spent.

That last step is what turns a soak from a chore into a decision. It tells you whether to buy replacement cartridges or to put the same ones back for another season.

The picks

ADIOS! Pool Filter Cleaner, 12X Enzyme Soak, 128 oz

Top pick - Not buying a cartridge at all

ADIOS! Pool Filter Cleaner, 12X Enzyme Soak, 128 oz

Often the correct purchase instead of a cartridge, because the most common reason a cartridge stops working is grease rather than wear.

The published figure

Liquid enzyme degreaser soak, stated by the maker for cartridge, DE and sand media

A garden hose rinses debris off the pleats and does nothing at all to the oils bound into them. Sunscreen, body oil and lotion glaze the fabric, and a glazed cartridge passes water around the pleats while looking clean.

An enzyme soak breaks that layer down, which restores flow on a cartridge that has been rinsed to death but is not physically worn. If your pressure drops back to near its clean reading afterwards, the cartridge had life left in it.

It does not repair torn pleats, collapsed cores or compacted media. Those are wear, and wear needs a new element.

What it does well

  • Cheaper than a cartridge set and often does the same job
  • Works on cartridge, DE and sand media rather than one type
  • Directly targets the oils a hose rinse cannot touch

What it costs you

  • Needs an overnight soak and somewhere to do it
  • Cannot fix physical wear - torn pleats or a soft core still mean replacement

Skip it if your pleats are torn or the element has gone soft in the middle. No soak restores a cartridge that has physically failed.

Aquatix Pro Premium Pool & Spa Filter Cartridge Cleaner Wand

Pick 2 - Rinsing between the pleats

Aquatix Pro Premium Pool & Spa Filter Cartridge Cleaner Wand

Directs water between the pleats instead of across them, which is the difference between cleaning a cartridge and driving debris further into it.

The published figure

Hose-fed wand with 6 water jets and a start-stop control

A thumb over a hose end fires a wide fan at the fabric, and most of that force pushes debris deeper into the pleat rather than lifting it out.

A wand puts narrow jets down into the fold and flushes along it. Six jets covers the pleat depth of a typical residential cartridge in one pass.

It removes debris. It does not remove oils - that is what the enzyme soak is for, and the two are complementary rather than alternatives.

What it does well

  • Flushes along the pleat rather than across it
  • Start-stop control saves water and soaking the person holding it
  • Cuts the time a full cartridge clean takes considerably

What it costs you

  • Does nothing about oils, which are the usual reason flow drops
  • Needs reasonable mains pressure to work properly

Skip it if your problem is falling flow rather than visible debris. That is grease and it needs a soak, not a rinse.

ADIOS! Pool Filter Cleaner, 4X Enzyme Soak, 32 oz

Pick 3 - A single cartridge soak

ADIOS! Pool Filter Cleaner, 4X Enzyme Soak, 32 oz

The small bottle of the same idea, for one cartridge rather than a season of them.

The published figure

32 oz enzyme degreaser at 4X concentration, stated for cartridge, DE and sand media

A single-element filter needs one soak at a time, and a 128 oz jug is a lot of shelf life to buy for that.

The concentration difference between the 4X and the 12X is exactly what it says, so compare on price per treatment rather than price per bottle.

Same limits as any enzyme soak: it dissolves oils, and it does nothing for torn pleats or a collapsed core.

What it does well

  • Right size for a single-element housing
  • Same enzyme chemistry as the larger bottle

What it costs you

  • Worse value per treatment than the 12X if you have four elements
  • Still an overnight job

Skip it if your housing takes four elements - buy the concentrate and save money per soak.

In The Swim The Ultimate Cartridge Filter Cleaner

Pick 4 - A long-established alternative

In The Swim The Ultimate Cartridge Filter Cleaner

The design that has been sold under this name for years, which in a category full of one-season listings counts for something.

The published figure

Cartridge filter cleaning tool for pool and spa elements

Filter cleaning tools are a category where identical products appear under a dozen brand names for a season and vanish. A product that has held one name for years is at least a known quantity.

The mechanism is the same as any wand: get water into the pleat rather than across it.

As always, this handles debris and not oils.

What it does well

  • Long-established rather than a seasonal listing
  • Simple, nothing to break

What it costs you

  • Publishes no jet count or flow specification
  • Same limitation as any wand - debris only, not grease

Skip it if you want a published specification to compare. This listing gives none, and the Aquatix Pro at least states its jet count.

POOLPURE CCP420 Pool Filter Cartridge, 4-pack

Pick 5 - Pentair Clean & Clear Plus 420

POOLPURE CCP420 Pool Filter Cartridge, 4-pack

A full four-cartridge set for a common in-ground filter, at a fraction of the price of the branded originals.

The published figure

Four-cartridge set for the Pentair CCP420, replacing R173576 and PCC105

Large cartridge filters use a set of four elements, and replacing one at a time creates uneven flow through the housing. Buy the set.

Compatibility is by part number, not by model name. Check the number molded into your existing cartridge against the listing before ordering.

A tired cartridge set is one of the most common reasons a chemically balanced pool still looks hazy.

What it does well

  • Complete set, so the housing loads evenly
  • Substantially cheaper than the original-brand equivalents
  • Cross-references the original part numbers

What it costs you

  • Fitment is by part number and mistakes are easy to make
  • Aftermarket media life varies by batch

Skip it if your part number does not match. A near-fit cartridge bypasses water around its edge.

How often

Cleaning cadence by filter type
FilterRoutine cleanDeep cleanMedia replacement
CartridgeRinse at 8-10 psi over cleanEnzyme soak, 2-3 times a season1-3 seasons
SandBackwash at 8-10 psi over cleanChemical clean annually3-5 years
DEBackwash and recharge at 8-10 psi over cleanStrip and clean grids annuallyGrids last years

Every threshold there is relative to the clean reading, which is the number most people never record. Take it the day you fit fresh media and write it on the housing with a marker.

Things that shorten filter life

  • **Pressure washing a cartridge.** It drives debris into the fabric and can tear pleats outright. A hose is enough; a wand is better.
  • **Household detergent.** It foams in the pool for weeks afterwards and does not remove oils well. Use an enzyme product made for the job.
  • **Bleach on a cartridge.** It degrades the fabric and shortens the element's life considerably.
  • **Running without a cartridge to buy time.** Everything you were catching goes through the pump and back into the pool.
  • **Letting it dry with debris on it.** Dried organic matter bonds to the fabric and is far harder to remove than wet.
  • **Over-backwashing a sand filter.** A slightly loaded sand bed filters better than a spotless one, so backwash on pressure rather than habit.

The upstream fix

Everything on this page is downstream work. The cheapest intervention is stopping material reaching the filter in the first place: a fine-mesh skimmer sock over the basket, and a rinse before swimming, which removes a surprising share of the lotion that would otherwise end up glazing your pleats.

Questions people actually ask

How do I clean a pool filter cartridge?
Two stages. Rinse between the pleats with a hose or a cleaning wand to remove visible debris, then soak overnight in an enzyme cleaner to dissolve the oils bound into the fabric. Reinstall and check the pressure - if it is back near the clean reading, the cartridge is fine.
How often should I clean my pool filter?
When pressure rises roughly 8 to 10 psi above the clean-filter reading, whatever the calendar says. Add a deep enzyme soak two or three times a season, and take the clean reading when you fit fresh media so you have something to compare against.
Can I use a pressure washer on a pool filter cartridge?
Don't. It drives debris deeper into the fabric and can tear the pleats. A garden hose is enough, and a cleaning wand that directs narrow jets into each pleat is both faster and gentler.
Why is my filter still dirty after rinsing?
Because rinsing removes debris and leaves oils. Sunscreen and body oil bind into the fabric and glaze it, which a hose cannot touch. That is what an enzyme soak is for, and it is usually what restores the flow.
Can I use dish soap to clean a pool filter?
No. It foams in the pool for weeks afterwards and does a poor job on the oils anyway. Use an enzyme cleaner formulated for filter media.
How do I know when to replace rather than clean the filter?
When an enzyme soak no longer brings pressure back toward the clean reading, or when you can see torn pleats, a soft core or cracked end caps. Until then, cleaning is cheaper and works.

Why Is My Pool Cloudy?

Check filtration, then chemistry, then everything else. Two of the six causes get worse if you add a chemical first.
