We have not used any of these. What we have done is compare the three specifications that actually decide how a net performs, and note which listings publish them - because in a category with hundreds of near-identical products, publishing a number is itself a signal.

• **Frame width.** Sets surface swept per pass. 17 to 20 inches is the useful residential range. Wider catches on skimmer throats, ladders and steps.
• **Bag depth.** Sets how much you hold before emptying. Flat for the surface, deep for a drop. This is the difference between a skimmer net and a leaf rake, and the two words are used interchangeably in listings.
• **Mesh aperture.** Decides what you actually catch. Almost never published, which is why a double-layer construction is the useful proxy: a coarse outer layer for leaves, a fine inner layer for pollen and grit.

Flat net or deep rake? Both

The pole is the part people get wrong

Every tool on this page and half the tools on this site attach to the same pole. Two published figures decide it, and only one of them is usually printed.

• **Length.** Must reach the center of the pool from the edge. A 12 ft pole does not reach the middle of anything wider than about 20 ft, and reaching is not the same as reaching comfortably at full extension.
• **Wall thickness.** Rarely published, and it is what decides survival. Thin-walled aluminum flexes at full extension, and repeated flex kinks it permanently at a joint. A listing that states 1.3 mm is telling you something the others are hiding.
• **Section count.** Two sections are stiffer than three at the same length; three pack down smaller. For a large pool, prefer fewer sections.

A deep bag is what separates a leaf rake from a flat skimmer net. If you are scooping a heavy autumn drop, depth is the specification that matters.

Everything else on this page removes debris you can see. A skimmer sock removes debris you cannot - pollen, hair, insect parts, fine grit - before it reaches the pump and filter. It costs less per season than a bottle of clarifier and it does more for water clarity than most of them.

One caution: socks restrict flow as they load, so check them whenever you check the basket rather than on a weekly schedule, and do not fit one to a pump already running at marginal flow.

What we could not tell you

Mesh aperture in microns, for any of these products. It is the single most useful specification in the category and not one manufacturer publishes it, so this page reasons from construction - single or double layer, stated fine or coarse - instead of quoting a number nobody has printed. We would rather say that than invent a figure.
