Why this page exists at the top of a cloudy-water section
Because on our own diagnosis of cloudy water, the filter is cause number one and accounts for more cloudy pools than every chemical cause combined. A cartridge that is loaded past its capacity passes water around the pleats instead of through them - the pump still runs, the returns still flow, the pressure can even look normal, and nothing is being filtered.
That failure is invisible from the deck, which is why people reach for a bottle of clarifier instead. A clarifier hands work to a filter that cannot accept it. The cartridge is both the cheaper fix and the correct one.
How to choose: five things, in order
This category is unusually easy to get wrong because the listings are written for search engines rather than for buyers. Work through these five in order and the choice makes itself.
1. The part number, not the filter model
This is the only specification that decides whether a cartridge fits. Read the number molded into the plastic end cap of the element you are holding, and buy against that.
Filter model names are not reliable, because the same housing has shipped with different elements across production years. Worse, most cartridges carry several numbers for the same physical part - Hayward's CX1200RE, Pleatco's PA120 and Unicel's C-8412 are one cartridge with three names. A listing that prints all of them is being helpful, not padding keywords.
2. Element count - buy the set
Large in-ground housings hold four elements; smaller ones hold one. Replacing a single element in a four-element filter does not give you a quarter of a new filter. It gives you one high-flow path and three restricted ones, so most of the water takes the new cartridge and the effective filter area drops rather than rises.
If your housing takes a set, buy the set. If it takes one, buying one is correct and not a compromise.
3. Filter area, and whether the arithmetic works
| Housing | Elements | Rating per element | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pentair Clean & Clear Plus 420 | 4 | 105 sq ft | 420 sq ft |
| Hayward SwimClear C4030 | 4 | 106 sq ft | 425 sq ft |
| Pentair Clean & Clear 200 | 1 | 200 sq ft | 200 sq ft |
| Hayward Star-Clear C1200 | 1 | 120 sq ft | 120 sq ft |
The number in a filter's name is usually its total square footage, and dividing it by the element count gives you the rating each cartridge has to carry. If an element's stated area does not fit that arithmetic, it is the wrong part however similar it looks.
4. Media and pleat count
Filter area is a function of how much fabric is folded into the same physical envelope, so pleat count is where a cheap cartridge cuts cost. Fewer, shallower pleats mean less area than the label claims and a shorter interval between cleans.
Very few listings publish a pleat count, which is itself informative. Where a maker states filter area per element and gives a full cross-reference list, it has made claims you can check. Where a listing gives neither, you are buying a photograph.
5. OEM or aftermarket
Aftermarket is the sensible default and it is what most of this page recommends. The case for the original part is narrow but real: a housing that has already chewed through aftermarket elements early - torn at the end cap, or gone soft in the core inside a season - is telling you its tolerances are unforgiving, and at that point the cheaper cartridge has stopped being cheaper.
Before you buy anything, soak the one you have
Most cartridges are replaced before they are worn out. The usual reason a cartridge stops working is not compacted media - it is oil.
Sunscreen, body oil and lotion bind into the fabric and glaze it. A garden hose blasts the visible debris off the pleats and leaves that layer completely untouched, so the cartridge looks clean, feels clean, and still passes water around the pleats. It is the same organic load behind a pool that goes cloudy after a busy weekend.
An overnight enzyme soak breaks that layer down - the full two-stage method is on how to clean a pool filter. The test afterwards is simple: reinstall and read the pressure gauge. If it drops back to near the clean-filter reading, the cartridge had life left in it and you have saved the cost of a set. If it does not, the media is genuinely spent and now you know rather than guess.
The picks

Top pick - Pentair Clean & Clear Plus 420
POOLPURE CCP420 Pool Filter Cartridge, 4-pack
A full four-cartridge set for a common in-ground filter, at a fraction of the price of the branded originals.
The published figure
Four-cartridge set for the Pentair CCP420, replacing R173576 and PCC105
Large cartridge filters use a set of four elements, and replacing one at a time creates uneven flow through the housing. Buy the set.
Compatibility is by part number, not by model name. Check the number molded into your existing cartridge against the listing before ordering.
A tired cartridge set is one of the most common reasons a chemically balanced pool still looks hazy.
What it does well
- Complete set, so the housing loads evenly
- Substantially cheaper than the original-brand equivalents
- Cross-references the original part numbers
What it costs you
- Fitment is by part number and mistakes are easy to make
- Aftermarket media life varies by batch
Skip it if your part number does not match. A near-fit cartridge bypasses water around its edge.

Pick 2 - Hayward SwimClear C4030, C4025 and C4020
Pool Filters PA106-PAK4 Filter Cartridge Set, 4-pack
A complete four-element set for the Hayward SwimClear family, listed against every cross-reference number you are likely to be holding.
The published figure
Four-element set, 106 sq ft per cartridge; listing cross-references CX880XRE, Unicel C-7488, PA106 and FC-1226
Hayward's large SwimClear housings take four elements, and the listing gives the OEM number plus the Unicel, Pleatco and Filbur equivalents. That matters because the number molded into your old cartridge is often the aftermarket one, not Hayward's.
106 sq ft per element is the figure to check against your housing's rating. A C4030 is a 425 sq ft filter across four elements; fitting 106 sq ft cartridges is what makes that arithmetic work.
Buying the set rather than one element keeps flow even across the housing, which is the whole reason multi-element filters exist.
What it does well
- Complete four-element set, so the housing loads evenly
- Publishes every common cross-reference number, not just one
- Covers three Hayward models from the same part
What it costs you
- Fitment is by part number and the SwimClear range has several similar ones
- Aftermarket pleat quality varies between production batches
Skip it if your housing is a C3030 or smaller. Those take a different element and a near-fit cartridge lets water bypass the pleats entirely.

Pick 3 - Single-element Hayward housings
POOLPURE C1200 Pool Filter Cartridge
The single-element case, where buying one cartridge is correct rather than a false economy.
The published figure
Single element replacing Hayward CX1200RE and HAY823C; listing cross-references Pleatco PA120
Not every filter takes a set. Hayward's smaller Star-Clear housings hold one element, so a single cartridge is the whole replacement rather than a quarter of it.
The cross-references matter more than the brand here: CX1200RE is Hayward's number, PA120 is Pleatco's, and C-8412 is Unicel's, for the same physical part.
Check the height and the end-cap style against your old element before ordering. Diameter alone is not enough to confirm a fit.
What it does well
- Correct single-element purchase for a single-element housing
- Lists the Hayward, Pleatco and Unicel numbers together
- Cheapest entry point into a proper in-ground cartridge
What it costs you
- One element means no redundancy if it tears
- Small filter area, so cleaning intervals are short on a busy pool
Skip it if your housing takes multiple elements. One cartridge in a four-element filter is not a partial fix, it is a bypass.

Pick 4 - Above-ground filter pumps
INTEX 29002E Type A Pool Filter Cartridge
The consumable that decides whether an above-ground pool ever clears, and the one people run for far too long.
The published figure
Dacron paper cartridge for Intex filter pumps
A cartridge that is loaded past its capacity passes water around the pleats rather than through them. The pump still runs and the water stops clearing, which reads as a chemistry problem.
Rinsing extends life; it does not restore it. Pleated paper media compacts permanently.
On an above-ground pool with a small pump, cartridge condition matters more to water clarity than any chemical on this site.
What it does well
- The cheapest fix for a pool that will not clear
- Direct fit for the most common above-ground pump family
What it costs you
- Genuinely consumable — weeks, not seasons
- Rinsing only delays replacement
Skip it if you own a sand or DE filter. This is not the same part.

Pick 5 - Buying the original part
Pentair EC-160318 Clean & Clear 200 sq ft Cartridge
The manufacturer's own cartridge, which is the right buy when a housing has already eaten an aftermarket element early.
The published figure
Pentair's own 200 sq ft element for the Clean & Clear range
Everything else on this page is aftermarket. This is the part Pentair sells for its own housing, and the pleat count, end-cap molding and fabric weight are whatever the filter was designed around.
That is worth paying for in one specific situation: a housing where aftermarket elements have collapsed, torn at the end cap, or gone soft inside a season. At that point the cheaper element is not cheaper.
200 sq ft is the element rating. Check it against your housing's total rating and its element count before ordering.
What it does well
- Made by the company that designed the housing it goes in
- End-cap molding and pleat spacing match the original tolerances
- The sensible answer after an aftermarket element has failed early
What it costs you
- Costs meaningfully more than an equivalent aftermarket element
- Sold singly, so a multi-element housing needs several
Skip it if your aftermarket cartridges have been lasting a normal two to three seasons. You would be paying for a problem you do not have.

Pick 6 - Not buying a cartridge at all
ADIOS! Pool Filter Cleaner, 12X Enzyme Soak, 128 oz
Often the correct purchase instead of a cartridge, because the most common reason a cartridge stops working is grease rather than wear.
The published figure
Liquid enzyme degreaser soak, stated by the maker for cartridge, DE and sand media
A garden hose rinses debris off the pleats and does nothing at all to the oils bound into them. Sunscreen, body oil and lotion glaze the fabric, and a glazed cartridge passes water around the pleats while looking clean.
An enzyme soak breaks that layer down, which restores flow on a cartridge that has been rinsed to death but is not physically worn. If your pressure drops back to near its clean reading afterwards, the cartridge had life left in it.
It does not repair torn pleats, collapsed cores or compacted media. Those are wear, and wear needs a new element.
What it does well
- Cheaper than a cartridge set and often does the same job
- Works on cartridge, DE and sand media rather than one type
- Directly targets the oils a hose rinse cannot touch
What it costs you
- Needs an overnight soak and somewhere to do it
- Cannot fix physical wear - torn pleats or a soft core still mean replacement
Skip it if your pleats are torn or the element has gone soft in the middle. No soak restores a cartridge that has physically failed.

Pick 7 - Nothing we would recommend it for
Unbranded Type A or C Replacement Filter Cartridge
The skip. Type A and Type C are different sizes, so a cartridge advertised as fitting both is telling you it was measured against neither.
The published figure
Unbranded cartridge listed as fitting "Type A or C" Intex above-ground pumps
Intex Type A and Type C are not interchangeable - they differ in height and in end-cap diameter, which is exactly why Intex gives them separate letters.
A listing that claims both is either describing a compromise dimension that seals properly in neither housing, or is using the letters as keywords. Either way you cannot tell which cartridge you will receive.
The failure is invisible: a cartridge that does not seal at the end cap lets unfiltered water straight past the pleats, so the pump runs, the pressure looks normal, and the water never clears.
What it does well
- Cheap
- Widely stocked
What it costs you
- Two different Intex sizes claimed by one part number
- No media specification published at all
- A poor end-cap seal bypasses the pleats without any visible symptom
Skip it if you know which type your pump takes - which is printed on the pump housing. Buy that one specifically.

How often a cartridge actually needs replacing
Two intervals get confused, and they are not the same thing.
| Clean it | Replace it | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Pressure roughly 8-10 psi above the clean reading | A soak no longer restores that pressure |
| Typical interval | Every few weeks in season | One to three seasons |
| What you do | Rinse, then soak if flow is down | Buy the correct part number |
| Physical signs | None - it is a pressure reading | Torn pleats, soft core, cracked end cap, permanently flat pleats |
Record the pressure reading when the filter is genuinely clean, because every threshold on this page is relative to it. Most people never take that reading, and then have no baseline to compare against for the rest of the filter's life.
Cartridge, sand or DE
This page is about cartridges, but the choice of filter type sets what you can expect from one. The relevant figure is how fine each type filters, because that decides what stays in your water.
| Type | Filters down to | Consumable | Trade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sand | Roughly 20-40 micron | Sand, every 3-5 years | Cheapest to run, coarsest filtration; backwashing wastes water |
| Cartridge | Roughly 10-20 micron | Elements, every 1-3 seasons | Finer than sand, no backwash water lost, but you clean it by hand |
| DE | Roughly 3-5 micron | DE powder each backwash, grids for years | Finest filtration, most maintenance, powder to handle |
Those bands are also why a clarifier helps a sand filter most and a DE filter barely at all - the clarifier's job is to clump particles above whatever threshold your filter cannot reach on its own.
Getting the most out of the one you buy
- **Record the clean pressure** on the day you fit it. Without that number, every later reading is uninterpretable.
- **Rinse between the pleats, not across them.** A fan of water directed straight at the fabric drives debris deeper in rather than lifting it out.
- **Soak when flow drops rather than when the pleats look dirty.** Appearance is a poor guide; pressure is the actual signal.
- **Fit a skimmer sock.** A few dollars of fine mesh over the skimmer basket intercepts hair, pollen and grit before any of it reaches the cartridge, and it is the single cheapest way to lengthen its life.
- **Own a spare set** if your housing takes one. It lets you swap and soak rather than run the pool unfiltered while a cartridge dries.
- **Never run the filter without an element** to buy time. Everything you were catching goes straight back into the pool and through the pump.
What we could not verify
Pleat count and media weight for any cartridge on this page. Neither figure is published by the aftermarket makers, and in most cases not by the original manufacturers either, so this page compares on element count, stated filter area and cross-reference coverage - the three things that are actually printed - rather than quoting a number nobody has stated.
We have not handled any of these cartridges. Availability of every product listed here was checked against its live retail listing on 4 September 2026 before it was included.
