Are Phosphates Bad for Your Pool?
Phosphate does not hurt your pool. It feeds the thing that does, and only above a level worth measuring.

What phosphate actually does
Nothing, directly. It does not irritate skin, does not damage surfaces, does not cloud water and does not corrode anything. It is a nutrient, and the thing it feeds is algae.
So the honest framing is not that phosphate is bad for your pool. It is that phosphate raises the standard your chlorine has to meet, and a pool with plenty of food available is less forgiving of a lapse in sanitizer than one without.
The level that matters
HTH's phosphate remover product page states that levels above 200 to 500 ppb make algae harder to control. That is the only manufacturer-published threshold we could source for this question, and it is the figure this page reasons from.

Where it comes from
- **Lawn fertilizer in runoff.** Usually the largest single source, and it arrives with every storm. See green pool after rain.
- **Decomposing leaves and organic debris.** The reason a pool under trees is being fed every autumn - do leaves cause algae.
- **Source water.** Some municipal supplies dose orthophosphate for corrosion control in the mains, which arrives with every top-up.
- **Some pool chemicals**, particularly certain sequestrants and metal treatments.
- **Dead algae.** A bloom that has been killed releases the phosphate that fed it back into the water, which is why the pool after a bloom is primed for the next one.
When it is worth testing
- **After a second bloom in one season.** One bloom is bad luck; two is a cause, and this is the cheapest one to check.
- **When chlorine demand is unexplainably high** and everything else reads in range.
- **After a big storm**, if runoff reaches the pool.
- **Before buying a remover.** This is the point of the whole page.
Phosphate is not on the seven-way strips most people own. It needs its own test, which is precisely why it is the cause people miss - chlorine and pH are visible in a minute and this one is not visible at all.
How removers work, and what they cost you
Lanthanum-based removers bind phosphate into an insoluble precipitate that the filter catches. The water clouds briefly and then clears - that is the product working rather than failing - and the filter takes the load.
HTH publishes a weekly maintenance rate of 2 fl oz per 10,000 gallons, which is the only dose figure we could source directly from a manufacturer in this category. That lets you work out what a bottle costs to run before you own it: a quart is sixteen weekly doses for a 10,000-gallon pool.
Do that arithmetic against any competitor that publishes a rate. Most do not, which is itself worth noticing.
Prevention beats removal
- **Remove leaves promptly.** A floating leaf has released nothing; a sunken one has.
- **Keep fertilized runoff away from the pool.** Decking that drains toward the water delivers phosphate every time it rains, and that is a landscaping fix.
- **Do not fertilize near the pool before forecast rain.** Obvious once said, rarely done.
- **Use a flocculant that also removes phosphate after a bloom.** HTH states its Drop Out Flocculant does both, which addresses the dead algae and what it released in one operation.
- **Test your fill water once.** If your municipal supply doses orthophosphate, every top-up is adding some and you should know that.
