Strips are for noticing change

Most pool problems announce themselves as a trend rather than a single reading - chlorine drifting down over three weeks, pH creeping up all season. A strip catches that, because it takes fifteen seconds and therefore actually happens on a Saturday morning.

A weekly approximate reading beats a monthly precise one for that job, and it is not close. The most accurate kit in the world tells you nothing about a pool it never gets used on.

Drop kits are for finding out what is wrong

When something has gone wrong, precision starts to matter and strips run out of resolution in exactly the places you need it.

  • **Chlorine above about 5 ppm.** Strip scales saturate and read 'high' for anything from 6 ppm to 30 ppm. When you are shocking, that is the entire range you care about.
  • **Combined chlorine.** Only FAS-DPD measures it, and it is the reading that tells you whether a shock has finished its job.
  • **Alkalinity, precisely.** It is the weakest reading on almost every strip, and it is the first correction in the balancing order - so an error here propagates through everything after it.
  • **Acid demand.** A titration that tells you how much acid your water actually needs, which no strip can approximate.

Making strips as accurate as they can be

  1. **Keep the bottle sealed and dry.** Humidity kills strips faster than age does, and a bottle left open on a damp deck is finished.
  2. **Write the date you opened it on the lid.** Most strips have a usable life measured in months once opened, and there is no other way to know.
  3. **Read in daylight.** Color matching under a porch light is a meaningful source of error.
  4. **Dip and read to the timing on the bottle.** Reading early or late shifts the colors, and everyone reads early.
  5. **Sample elbow-deep, away from returns and skimmers.** Surface water is not representative of the pool.

Making drop kits work

  1. **Replace reagents each season.** They expire, and an expired reagent reads low without telling you it is doing so.
  2. **Rinse the vial with pool water before filling.** Residue from the last test skews the next one.
  3. **Hold the bottle vertical when counting drops.** An angled bottle delivers a different drop size, which on a titration is a direct error.
  4. **Read against a white background in daylight.** The comparator block assumes it.
  5. **Store reagents out of heat and sunlight**, which is the same rule as everything else in pool care.

The best test kit is the one you run. A strip takes fifteen seconds, which is the difference between testing weekly and testing when something looks wrong.

FAS-DPD is a drop-count titration, so the chlorine reading is a number you counted rather than a color you matched.

Every strip and every DPD color-match kit asks you to judge a shade. FAS-DPD asks you to count drops until a color disappears, which removes the judgment entirely.

That matters most exactly where the cheap methods fail: above about 5 ppm free chlorine, color-match scales saturate and read 'high' for anything from 6 ppm to 30 ppm. When you are shocking, that is the range you are in.

It also measures combined chlorine separately, which is the reading that tells you whether the shock worked or the pool needs another round.

DPD is a color comparator: you match your sample against a printed block. It is quick and it is perfectly adequate at normal chlorine levels.

It saturates at high chlorine. If you shock regularly and want to know whether you are at 8 ppm or 25 ppm, this kit will not tell you.

For everything other than chlorine — pH, alkalinity, hardness, cyanuric acid — it is the same reagents and the same accuracy as the more expensive kit.

Questions people actually ask

Are pool test strips accurate?
Accurate enough for weekly monitoring, and not accurate enough for diagnosis. They are weakest on alkalinity and they saturate above about 5 ppm free chlorine, which is exactly the range you are in when shocking.
Should I use test strips or a liquid test kit?
Both, for different jobs. Strips for the weekly check, because the test that takes fifteen seconds is the one that gets done. A drop kit for the week something is wrong, when precision genuinely matters.
How long do pool test strips last?
Months once opened, and less in humidity - which kills them faster than age does. Write the opening date on the lid, keep the bottle sealed, and do not store them anywhere damp.
What is FAS-DPD and why does it matter?
A titration method where you count drops until a color disappears, rather than matching a shade. That removes the judgment entirely and, crucially, reads accurately at shock-level chlorine where every color-match method saturates.
