Why the pole is where the money goes

Every net, brush and vacuum head on this page clips to the same pole. It is used on every single cleaning task, it takes all the leverage, and it is the item people economize on and then replace twice in a season.

Two figures decide it, and only one is usually printed:

  • **Length.** It has to reach the middle of the pool from the edge. A 12 ft pole does not reach the center of anything wider than about 20 ft, and reaching is not the same as reaching comfortably at full extension.
  • **Wall thickness.** Rarely published, and it is what decides survival. Thin-walled aluminum flexes at full extension, and repeated flex kinks it permanently at a joint. A listing that states a figure like 1.3 mm is telling you something the others are hiding.
  • **Section count.** Two sections are stiffer than three at the same length; three pack down smaller. For a large pool, prefer fewer sections.

Two nets, not one

The most common mistake in assembling a first kit is buying only the deep leaf rake because it is the more capable tool. It is - and it is not the one that gets used.

A light flat net makes the daily two-minute surface pass feel like nothing, and that daily pass is what keeps leaves off the floor entirely. A heavy deep rake makes the same job feel like work, and work that feels like work does not happen every day. Full comparison on skimmer net vs leaf rake.

Matching the brush to your surface

Brush bristles by pool surface
SurfaceBristlesWhy
Gunite, concrete, plasterStainless steelRough surface, and it shelters algae in the pores
Vinyl linerNylon onlyStainless will cut a liner outright
FiberglassNylonSmooth surface needs no aggression, and stainless can mark it
Tile waterlineNylon, or a dedicated tile brushGrout is softer than it looks

Getting this wrong is expensive in one direction only: a nylon brush on plaster is merely slow, a stainless brush on vinyl is permanent damage. The heads that state which surfaces they are safe on are compared on best pool brush.

The picks

ARLBA Telescoping Pool Pole, 16.5 ft, 4-section aluminum

Top pick - Reaching the middle of a wide pool

ARLBA Telescoping Pool Pole, 16.5 ft, 4-section aluminum

Wall thickness is the specification that decides whether a pole survives the season, and this one publishes it.

The published figure

16.5 ft extended, 1.30 mm anodized aluminum, four sections with three locking cams, 1-1/4 in end

Every net, brush and vacuum head on this site attaches to a pole, and the pole is where people economize and then replace twice.

1.3 mm wall thickness is the published figure to compare against. Thin-walled poles flex at full extension, and the flex is what eventually kinks them permanently at the joint.

16.5 feet reaches the middle of most residential pools from the edge. A 12 ft pole does not, on anything wider than about 20 feet.

What it does well

  • Publishes wall thickness, 1.30 mm, which most pole listings do not
  • 16.5 ft reaches the center of a typical residential pool
  • Standard fitting works with every net and brush on this site

What it costs you

  • Four sections flex more at full extension than two
  • Aluminum at this length is heavy overhead

Skip it if you own a small above-ground pool you can reach across. A 12 ft two-section pole is stiffer and lighter.

POOLWHALE Pool Leaf Skimmer, flat surface net

Pick 2 - Daily surface skimming

POOLWHALE Pool Leaf Skimmer, flat surface net

The everyday net. Flat, light and quick, for the two-minute pass that stops leaves sinking in the first place.

The published figure

Flat net for surface work, pole not included

A leaf that is still floating costs two minutes to remove. The same leaf on the floor two days later costs a vacuum cycle and has started releasing phosphate into the water.

That is the entire argument for owning a cheap flat net alongside a deep rake: you will actually use it daily, which is the only thing that matters.

Flat nets are wrong for anything on the bottom. Their whole design assumes the debris is on the surface.

What it does well

  • Light enough that the daily pass actually happens
  • Fast through the water with almost no drag
  • Cheap enough to replace without thinking about it

What it costs you

  • Useless for anything that has already sunk
  • Small capacity

Skip it if you are clearing a heavy drop off the pool floor — that is a deep rake job.

ProTuff 490 Promise Pro Pool Leaf Rake, 19.5 in

Pick 3 - Heavy leaf fall

ProTuff 490 Promise Pro Pool Leaf Rake, 19.5 in

A wide frame and a deep bag, which is the combination that decides how many passes a leaf drop takes.

The published figure

19.5 in frame with a deep bag; the widest opening in this roundup

Two numbers decide a leaf rake: the width of the opening and the depth of the bag. Width sets how much surface you sweep per pass; depth sets how much you can hold before you stop to empty it.

At 19.5 inches this is at the wide end of what fits comfortably down a standard skimmer throat and around a ladder.

A deep bag is what separates a leaf rake from a flat skimmer net. If you are scooping a heavy autumn drop, depth is the specification that matters.

What it does well

  • Wide opening covers more surface per pass
  • Deep bag holds a full sweep without emptying
  • Reinforced frame, which is where cheap nets fail first

What it costs you

  • A full deep bag is heavy on a long pole
  • Too bulky for skimming a few surface leaves

Skip it if your daily job is a handful of floating leaves. A flat net is faster and lighter for that.

Poolmaster 18-Inch Stainless Steel Pool Algae Brush

Pick 4 - Brushing before you shock

Poolmaster 18-Inch Stainless Steel Pool Algae Brush

Stainless bristles on a concrete pool are the step that makes the shock work, and the cheapest item in any of these roundups.

The published figure

18 in stainless steel bristles on an aluminum back, for gunite and concrete

Algae clinging to a wall is physically shielded from the water around it. Brushing first is what lets chlorine reach the organism rather than the film over it, which is why every ordered fix on this site puts brushing before dosing.

Stainless is for gunite, concrete and plaster only. On a vinyl liner it will cut, and you want nylon.

18 inches is the size that covers a wall in a reasonable number of passes without being unmanageable on a long pole.

What it does well

  • Makes the shock dose that follows it materially more effective
  • Costs a fraction of any chemical it improves
  • Aluminum back resists the corrosion that kills cheap brushes

What it costs you

  • Stainless bristles will damage a vinyl liner
  • Pole sold separately

Skip it if your pool has a vinyl liner. Buy the nylon equivalent instead.

POOLWHALE Pool Vacuum Head and 36 ft Hose Kit

Pick 5 - The complete manual kit

POOLWHALE Pool Vacuum Head and 36 ft Hose Kit

Head and hose together, which avoids the classic mistake of buying a head and discovering the hose is the expensive part.

The published figure

Weighted vacuum head with wheels and 1.5 in x 36 ft hose

Manual vacuuming is slow, and it is also the only method that gets exactly where you point it. Nothing automatic clears one stubborn corner as reliably.

36 ft of hose covers most residential pools from a single skimmer. Measure from your skimmer to the far corner and add a third.

A weighted head with wheels stays down and rolls rather than skating, which is the difference between vacuuming and stirring.

What it does well

  • Head and hose matched, so nothing else to buy
  • Weighted with wheels, so it tracks rather than lifts
  • Works with any standard telescopic pole

What it costs you

  • Manual labor
  • Debris goes through the pump basket and filter

Skip it if you already own a robot and only ever vacuum a small area — a handheld is enough.

Coopache Pool Skimmer Socks, 30-pack

Pick 6 - Catching what the net misses

Coopache Pool Skimmer Socks, 30-pack

A few dollars of fine mesh over the skimmer basket removes more fine debris than any chemical on this site.

The published figure

Fine-mesh elastic liners for the skimmer basket, 30 per pack

A skimmer basket catches leaves. Everything smaller goes through it and into the pump, then into the filter, where it is your filter's problem.

A sock over the basket takes pollen, hair, insects and grit out before any of that happens, and it is the single cheapest upgrade to a pool's water clarity.

They restrict flow as they load. Check them at the same time you check the basket, not weekly.

What it does well

  • Removes the fine debris that otherwise loads the filter
  • Costs less per season than a single bottle of clarifier
  • Extends the interval between filter cleans

What it costs you

  • Restricts flow noticeably once loaded, and needs checking often
  • Disposable, so there is a small ongoing cost

Skip it if your pump already runs at marginal flow. A loaded sock will starve it.

INTEX Deluxe Above Ground Pool Maintenance Kit, 28003E

Pick 7 - Above-ground pools 18 ft and over

INTEX Deluxe Above Ground Pool Maintenance Kit, 28003E

A genuine convenience for the pool it is sized for, and the wrong buy for anything larger - the pole length is the giveaway.

The published figure

Listing states a 100 in telescoping pole, skimmer and brush head, for above-ground pools 18 ft diameter and above

Bundled kits are judged on their weakest item, and on almost every kit that is the pole. A 100 inch pole is about 8 ft 4 in, which reaches the middle of an 18 ft round pool and nothing bigger.

For the pool Intex states it is for, that is honest sizing and the kit is good value. For a 20 by 40 in-ground pool it is not a budget option, it is the wrong tool.

Buying the pieces separately costs a little more and lets you put the money where it matters, which is almost always the pole.

What it does well

  • Correctly sized for the above-ground pools Intex names
  • Everything arrives matched and fitting, with no adapter guesswork
  • Cheaper than the same items bought individually

What it costs you

  • The 100 in pole rules out anything larger than a mid-size above-ground pool
  • Kit components are chosen for price, so the weakest item sets the quality

Skip it if you own an in-ground pool. The pole cannot reach the middle of one, and the pole is the item everything else attaches to.

Kit or separates?

A bundle is genuinely good value when it is honestly sized for your pool and you need everything at once. Intex states its Deluxe kit is for above-ground pools 18 ft in diameter and above, and gives the pole length as 100 inches - that is honest, checkable sizing, and for that pool the kit is a sensible buy.

For an in-ground pool it is the wrong tool rather than the budget option, because 100 inches is about 8 ft 4 in and will not reach the middle of anything. Buying separates costs a little more and puts the money where it matters.

The middle path most people end up on: buy a good pole separately, and take the cheap net and brush from wherever is convenient.

What is deliberately not on this list

  • **A leaf vacuum.** Genuinely useful, and a seasonal tool rather than a weekly one - see best pool vacuum for leaves.
  • **A robot.** It replaces the vacuum head for routine work, and does not replace the net, the brush or the pole. Whether it is worth it depends on how often you currently vacuum.
  • **A thermometer, a chlorine floater, a leaf net cover.** All useful; none of them is a cleaning tool, and this list is deliberately the minimum that covers every manual job.
  • **A test kit.** Not a cleaning tool but arguably more important than any of them - see best pool test kits.

Looking after them

  • **Rinse everything with fresh water after use.** Chlorinated water left to dry corrodes aluminum joints and stiffens net mesh.
  • **Store the pole horizontally or hanging.** Standing it on end for months puts a permanent bend in the bottom section.
  • **Retract the pole fully before storing.** An extended pole left in the sun is a warped pole.
  • **Rinse nets inside out** so debris falls away rather than drying into the mesh.
  • **Keep the vacuum hose coiled loosely,** not folded. Kinks become permanent flow restrictions.

Questions people actually ask

What tools do I need to clean a pool?
Six: a telescopic pole, a flat skimmer net, a deep leaf rake, a wall brush matched to your surface, a vacuum head with hose, and skimmer socks. That set covers every manual cleaning job on a residential pool.
Are pool cleaning kits worth buying?
When the kit is honestly sized for your pool, yes. Judge it on the pole, because that is the weakest item on almost every bundle and the one everything else attaches to. A kit with a 100 inch pole suits a mid-size above-ground pool and no in-ground pool at all.
What length pool pole do I need?
Long enough to reach the center of the pool from the edge - for most residential in-ground pools that is 15 to 16 ft. A 12 ft pole falls short on anything wider than about 20 ft. Wall thickness matters as much as length and is far less often published.
What kind of pool brush should I use?
Stainless steel bristles on gunite, concrete and plaster; nylon on vinyl and fiberglass. Stainless will cut a vinyl liner, and that mistake is permanent, so match the brush to the surface before anything else.
Do I need both a skimmer net and a leaf rake?
Yes, and it is not an upsell. The rake is the more capable tool and the light flat net is the one you will actually use daily - and the daily pass is what stops leaves reaching the floor at all.
