We have not run any of these
Nothing on this page was tested in a pool. We read the maker's feature text on each live listing on 2026-09-17, confirmed each one was offered new rather than only used, and compared what they state like for like. Where a listing does not state something, this page says so rather than guessing.
The trade every suction cleaner makes
A suction-side cleaner has no motor of its own. It connects by hose to the skimmer or a dedicated suction port in the pool wall, and the water your main pump is already pulling through the filter is what drives it across the floor. That is the whole appeal: no booster pump to buy, nothing to plug in, no battery to wear out.
It is also the whole catch. Everything the cleaner lifts travels down the hose into your pump basket and then your filter. The Zodiac MX6 listing says so in as many words - it delivers debris to the pool filtration system - and Hayward's "no messy debris bags to empty" is the same fact phrased as a feature. Polaris goes further on the MAXX and tells you to empty the pump and skimmer baskets and clean the filter regularly, because a restricted filter reduces cleaning power.
| Suction-side | Pressure-side | Robot | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powered by | Your existing pool pump | A booster pump, or return-line pressure on some models | Its own motor, from an outlet or a battery |
| Debris goes to | Pump basket and filter | Its own bag | Its own filter |
| Extra equipment | None | Usually a booster pump | None |
| Leaf-heavy pool | Poor fit - leaves go to your basket | Good fit - the bag takes them | Limited by its own debris capacity |
Read the debris row twice. On a pool with light debris - dust, a few leaves, grit blown off a deck - sending it to the filter is fine, because holding dirt is the filter's job. On a pool under trees you have automated the process of clogging your own basket. That is the one situation where no cleaner on this page is the right buy: a pressure-side cleaner with its own bag, reviewed on Polaris Vac-Sweep 280, or a robot from best robotic pool cleaners, keeps the leaves out of your plumbing.
How we compared them
Three things decide whether a suction cleaner works in your pool, and all three can be read off a listing before you spend anything. Brand, steering names and marketing adjectives come after.
- Whether it works at your pump's flow. A suction cleaner moves only as well as the water pulled through it. If you run a variable-speed pump turned down to save electricity, a cleaner that needs more flow than that will crawl or stall. We looked for an explicit low-flow or variable-speed claim.
- Whether its hose reaches. The cleaner can only clean as far as its hose lets it travel from your suction point. We recorded the hose supplied where the maker states it, and the arithmetic for checking your own pool is below.
- What it states it cleans. Floor only, floor and walls, or steps and the waterline as well. Suction cleaners differ more on this than on any other published claim.
We did not rank on noise, speed or durability, because none of those claims come with a figure that can be checked. Where a listing makes one - quiet running on the Hayward Navigator Pro, faster cleaning on the Pentair SandShark - it is reported as the maker's claim and nothing more.
What each listing states
| Cleaner | States it cleans | Low-flow or variable-speed claim | Hose supplied | Pool size stated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hayward AquaNaut 400 | Every inch, including steps and waterline | Yes - power at any flow; ideal for variable-speed pumps | Not stated | Pitched at a 16 x 32 ft pool |
| Zodiac MX6 | Floor and walls, at the proper flow | Yes - calibrates for variable-speed pumps and lower flow | 32 ft | Not stated |
| Polaris MAXX | Floor to the waterline | Yes - functions at lower flow rates | Not stated | Not stated |
| Hayward TracVac | Floor and walls, on tracks | Not stated | Not stated | Up to 20 x 40 ft |
| Zodiac G3 | Surface types only | Yes - low-flow and variable-speed compatible | 39 ft | Not stated |
| Hayward Navigator Pro | Floor, walls and coves | Not stated | Not stated | Up to 20 x 40 ft |
| Pentair SandShark | Not stated - steers around corners, ladders and obstacles | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Pentair Kruiser K60430 | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
Laid out like that, the order explains itself. The top three state low-flow operation and the broadest coverage. The two 20 x 40 ft Hayward units are the only ones that give a pool-size ceiling. The two Pentair listings state the least, which is why they rank last - not because anything is known to be wrong with them, but because there is almost nothing to check them against.
Low flow: the variable-speed pump question
Many pools now run a variable-speed pump, and the point of owning one is to run it slower for longer, which uses less electricity. A suction cleaner complicates that, because it needs enough water moving through its hose to drive itself. Turn the pump down far enough and the cleaner slows, stops climbing, or stops moving.
Four listings on this page address that directly. Hayward states the AquaNaut 400's V-Flex turbine delivers power at any flow and calls it ideal for variable-speed pumps. Zodiac states the MX6's flow control is easy to calibrate for variable-speed pumps and lower flow rates, and is candid that it climbs walls when set to the proper flow. Zodiac also states the G3 is compatible with low-flow and variable-speed pumps. Polaris states the MAXX functions at lower flow rates, and that its Regulator Valve controls excess flow - which covers the opposite problem, a pump pulling more than the cleaner wants.
The other four say nothing either way. That does not mean they will not run on a variable-speed pump; it means you find out after you buy. None of the eight publish a minimum flow in gallons per minute, so there is no number to set your pump to. Expect to adjust the pump speed, and the flow control where the cleaner has one, when it is first installed.
Hose reach: the arithmetic
A suction cleaner's hose runs from the skimmer or suction port, down the wall and across the floor. If the farthest part of the pool is beyond its reach, that part never gets cleaned. Only two listings here state the hose in the box - 32 ft with the Zodiac MX6 and 39 ft with the Zodiac G3 - so for those two this is the check to make before buying.
Run it with your own pool's measurements. A suction point near the middle of a long wall needs far less hose than a skimmer in a corner, and the difference is often the whole answer. The 20 x 40 ft ratings on the two Hayward units come without a stated hose length, so confirm the hose supplied reaches your farthest corner too.
What it cleans: floor, walls, steps and waterline
This is where suction cleaners differ most, and where the claims deserve the closest reading. The waterline matters because it is where the oily scum line forms - the most visible dirt in a pool, and the thing a floor-only cleaner leaves alone.
- Steps and waterline. Hayward states the AquaNaut 400 covers every inch of the pool including both. Polaris states the MAXX cleans from the floor to the waterline, with active scrubbing brushes. No other listing here claims the waterline.
- Floor and walls. Zodiac states the MX6 covers floor and walls, climbing when set to the proper flow. Hayward states the TracVac's tracks glide across floor and walls, and that the Navigator Pro travels the floor, walls and coves.
- Not stated. The Zodiac G3 lists the surfaces it is safe on - tile, vinyl, gunite and fiberglass - but not which parts of the pool it reaches. The Pentair SandShark states it steers around tight corners, ladders and obstacles. The Kruiser states neither.
Climbing on a suction cleaner depends on the flow through it, and Zodiac is the one maker here that says so outright. If walls and the waterline are the reason you are buying, a robot does both without depending on your pump at all - that comparison is on robot vs manual vacuum.
Fine dirt and sand
A suction cleaner filters nothing itself; your pool filter does that. So fine debris is a question about your filter as much as the cleaner. Polaris states the MAXX's HALO design picks up fine silt and sand as well as larger, long debris - a claim about what reaches the hose. Whether that dirt stays out of the pool afterwards depends on your sand, cartridge or DE filter.
If fine dirt that drifts back into the pool is your actual problem, best pool vacuum for sand and fine dirt works through it, and how to clean a pool filter covers the job a suction cleaner makes more frequent.
Safety at the suction port
Pentair states that the SandShark's vac port door fitting has a spring-loaded cover for added safety, and that it must be opened with a tool. No other listing here mentions anything similar. A wall suction port draws hard while the pump runs, so on a pool children use, a fitting that cannot be opened by hand is a worthwhile detail. If you are unsure about the suction fittings already in your pool, have whoever maintains your equipment look at them before you connect any cleaner.
What no listing here publishes
A minimum or maximum flow in gallons per minute, a noise figure, a cleaning time, and - on six of the eight - the hose supplied. Those are the numbers that would make suction cleaners directly comparable, and no listing on this page prints all of them. It is the main reason this ranking leans on what each listing claims to clean and whether it addresses low flow, because those are the claims that exist.
The picks

Top pick - Steps, waterline and variable-speed pumps
Hayward AquaNaut 400 Suction Pool Cleaner, 4 Wheel
The broadest coverage claim of any suction cleaner here - steps and waterline - and the most direct low-flow claim, which is the one that matters on a variable-speed pump.
The published figure
V-Flex turbine stated to eliminate clogs and deliver power at any flow; roller skirts; stated to cover steps and waterline; pitched at a 16 x 32 ft pool; no booster pump
Hayward states the V-Flex turbine eliminates clogs and delivers power at any flow. That second part is the one to notice: a suction cleaner runs on whatever flow your pump gives it, and a variable-speed pump turned down to save electricity is exactly where that flow gets thin.
Its listing states it covers every inch of the pool including steps and the waterline. Only one other suction cleaner on this page, the Polaris MAXX, makes a waterline claim at all.
Hayward pitches the four-wheel AquaNaut at a medium 16 x 32 ft pool, and states that pre-programmed steering sequences periodically reverse the left wheel so it covers the whole floor. Patented tire treads are stated to help it climb and get past main drains.
What it does well
- States coverage of steps and the waterline
- V-Flex turbine stated to deliver power at any flow, and stated as ideal for variable-speed pumps
- Roller skirts stated to keep suction on uneven surfaces
What it costs you
- All debris goes to your pump basket and filter, as with every suction cleaner
- Priced at the upper end of suction-side cleaners
- No hose length stated on the listing
Skip it if your pool is under trees and fills with leaves every week. No suction cleaner handles that well; a pressure-side cleaner with its own bag, or a robot, does.

Pick 2 - Smaller pools on low-flow pumps
Zodiac MX6 Suction-Side In-Ground Pool Cleaner
The plainest-spoken listing here: no extra electricity, calibrated for low flow, and debris goes to your filter. A sensible buy for a smaller pool, where its 32 ft of hose is not a limit.
The published figure
Cyclonic Turbine and X-Trax tracks; X-Drive navigation for floor and walls; flow calibration for variable-speed pumps; no added electricity or batteries; 32 ft Twist Lock hose; skimmer or dedicated suction line
Zodiac states the MX6 works with your existing filtration without the need for additional electricity or batteries, and that its flow control is easy to calibrate for variable-speed pumps and lower flow rates. Those are the two reasons to own a suction cleaner at all, and they are stated in writing.
It is also direct about the trade: the listing states it delivers debris to the pool filtration system. Every suction cleaner does that; few say so.
It ships with 32 ft of Twist Lock hose. From a skimmer in one corner of a large pool that may not reach the far end - the reach arithmetic is on the roundup page.
What it does well
- States no additional electricity or batteries
- Flow calibration stated for variable-speed pumps and lower flow rates
- Turbine and tracks stated to climb walls at the proper flow
What it costs you
- 32 ft of hose as shipped is short for a large pool with a corner skimmer
- Sends all debris to the pump basket and filter
- Wall climbing depends on setting the flow correctly
Skip it if your pool is long and the only suction point is a corner skimmer. Check the hose reach before you buy.

Pick 3 - Running off the existing skimmer line
Polaris MAXX Premium Suction-Side Automatic Pool Cleaner
Uses the pump you already have and sends every piece of debris through your filter, which is the whole trade.
The published figure
Suction-side; stated to clean from the floor to the waterline with active scrubbing brushes; HALO debris clearance; functions at lower flow rates; Regulator Valve controls excess flow
A suction-side cleaner needs no extra pump and no power outlet. It plugs into the skimmer and runs on the filtration you already pay to run.
Everything it picks up goes into the pump basket and the filter, so it shortens the interval between filter cleans considerably.
Polaris adds its own caveat: empty the pump and skimmer baskets and clean the filter regularly, because a restricted filter reduces cleaning power. That is the ongoing maintenance a suction cleaner asks for, stated by its maker.
What it does well
- No booster pump, no power outlet, no battery
- Stated to clean from the floor to the waterline, with active scrubbing brushes
What it costs you
- All debris passes through the pump basket and filter
- Reduces filtration flow while it runs
- Polaris states it is not for the first clean-up after construction, resurfacing or seasonal opening
Skip it if your pool collects a lot of leaves. Sending those through the filter is a worse problem than the one you were solving.

Pick 4 - Tracks rather than wheels, up to 20 x 40 ft
Hayward TracVac Automatic Pool Vacuum for In-Ground Pools
The only tracked machine on this page. Tracks spread the drive load differently from wheels, and Hayward names every common pool surface rather than hedging.
The published figure
Rugged tracks across floor and walls; stated for gunite, fiberglass, vinyl and tile; rated for pools up to 20 x 40 ft; connects to suction port or skimmer; ships with hose, float, regulator valve and flow gauge
Hayward states rugged tracks that glide across the pool floor and walls, and rates the TracVac for pools up to 20 by 40 feet - the same ceiling the Navigator Pro carries.
The surface list is unusually complete: concrete or gunite, fiberglass, vinyl and tile are all named. Most suction cleaners name one or two and leave you guessing about the rest.
It is the only cleaner here that itemizes what is in the box - an adjustable hose, float, regulator valve, hose cone adapter, flow gauge, hose clip and valve cap. A flow gauge matters on a suction cleaner, because flow is what drives it.
What it does well
- Stated rating up to 20 x 40 ft
- Names gunite, fiberglass, vinyl and tile as suitable surfaces
- Ships with a flow gauge and regulator valve, not just the cleaner
What it costs you
- No waterline claim on the listing
- No low-flow or variable-speed pump claim
- Hose length is not stated, only that a hose is included
Skip it if you want the waterline cleaned. The AquaNaut 400 and the Polaris MAXX state it; this listing does not.

Pick 5 - The simplest setup, and the longest hose
Zodiac G3 Suction-Side In-Ground Pool Cleaner
Three-step setup, a disc rather than tracks, and the longest hose on this page. Its listing claims less than the others, and it asks less of you.
The published figure
Disc-style with a 36-fin disc and wheel deflector; low-flow and variable-speed pump compatible; tile, vinyl, gunite and fiberglass; 39 ft push-fit hose; skimmer or dedicated suction line
The G3 uses a 36-fin disc that Zodiac states maximizes adhesion and eliminates hang-ups on lights, drain covers and fittings, with a wheel deflector to get it out of tight corners. Setup is stated as three steps: attach the disc, the wheel deflector and the hose.
It ships with 39 ft of push-fit hose, the longest stated on this page, which is what matters on a longer pool or one with the skimmer in a corner.
Zodiac states it is compatible with low-flow and variable-speed pumps and safe on tile, vinyl, gunite and fiberglass.
What it does well
- 39 ft of hose, the longest stated here
- Three-step setup
- Stated compatible with low-flow and variable-speed pumps
What it costs you
- No wall-climbing or waterline claim on the listing
- No programmed steering stated
- All debris goes to the pump basket and filter
Skip it if you want the walls cleaned. The G3 listing makes no wall claim; most of the others here do.

Pick 6 - The cheapest Hayward 20 x 40 ft unit
Hayward Navigator Pro Suction Cleaner for In-Ground Pools
Programmed steering, a 20 x 40 ft rating and a stated silent run, at the lowest price of the Hayward units here.
The published figure
SmartDrive programmed steering with preset turns across floor, walls and coves; for in-ground pools up to 20 x 40 ft; tool-free connection to suction port or skimmer; no booster pump
Hayward states SmartDrive programmed steering uses preset turns to travel the floor, walls and coves, and rates the Navigator Pro for in-ground pools up to 20 x 40 ft - the same ceiling as Hayward gives the TracVac.
Connection is tool-free to a suction port or skimmer, and no booster pump is required. Silent operation is stated, which no other listing on this page claims.
Against Hayward's own TracVac it trades tracks for wheels and a published surface list for a quieter run, at about a hundred dollars less.
What it does well
- Programmed steering with preset turns
- Stated rating up to 20 x 40 ft
- Quiet operation stated
What it costs you
- Steering aside, the listing publishes little the TracVac does not
- No waterline claim on the listing
- Debris goes to your pump basket and filter
Skip it if your pool has gunite, tile or fiberglass surfaces you want named on the box. The TracVac lists them; this one does not.

Pick 7 - A safety-covered vac port
Pentair Kreepy Krauly SandShark In-Ground Suction Pool Cleaner
The Kreepy Krauly with programmed steering, and the only listing here that states a safety cover on the wall fitting.
The published figure
SmartTrac programmed steering around corners, ladders and obstacles; vac port door fitting with a spring-loaded cover opened with a tool; 13 x 13 x 13 in
Pentair states SmartTrac programmed steering maneuvers around tight corners, ladders and obstacles, and claims it cleans faster than random-style cleaners, reducing missed spots.
The detail no other listing here mentions: the vac port door fitting has a spring-loaded cover for added safety that must be opened with a tool. On a pool children use, a suction port that cannot be casually opened is worth having.
It measures a stated 13 x 13 x 13 inches. The listing publishes no hose length and says nothing about pump flow.
What it does well
- Programmed steering stated to handle ladders and obstacles
- Spring-loaded vac port cover that opens only with a tool
- Stated to clean faster than random-style cleaners
What it costs you
- No wall, step or waterline claim on the listing
- No hose length or pump-flow guidance stated
- Debris goes to the pump basket and filter
Skip it if your pump is variable-speed and you run it low. The listing states nothing about low-flow operation; the AquaNaut 400 and MX6 do.

Pick 8 - Fewest moving parts
Pentair Kreepy Krauly Kruiser Automatic In-Ground Pool Cleaner, K60430
One moving part is the whole argument. The listing says almost nothing else, and that thinness is the honest caveat.
The published figure
Suction-side; wider mouth for large and small debris; one moving part
Pentair states one moving part, for less maintenance, and a wider mouth for both large and small debris. For a cleaner that runs for hours on every cycle, fewer moving parts means fewer to wear out.
Beyond that the listing is very thin: no pool-size rating, no hose length, and no statement about walls, steps, the waterline or low-flow pumps. We will not fill those gaps in for it.
It showed limited stock when we checked on 2026-09-17.
What it does well
- One moving part, per the listing
- Wider mouth stated for large and small debris
- Easy installation stated
What it costs you
- Almost no published specification to compare
- No low-flow or variable-speed pump claim
- Debris goes to the pump basket and filter
Skip it if you need to know it will cover your pool. Nothing on the listing lets you check that; the two Hayward 20 x 40 ft units do.

Who should buy a suction-side cleaner
- An in-ground pool with light debris. Dust, sand and a few leaves - the kind of load a pool filter is built to take.
- A pool with no booster pump, and an owner with no wish to add one. A suction cleaner is the automatic option that adds nothing to the equipment pad.
- Anyone who does not want another thing to charge or plug in. Nothing on this page has a battery or a power cord.
Who should not
- A pool under trees. Every leaf goes into your pump basket. A pressure-side cleaner with a bag, or a robot, keeps them out of the plumbing.
- An above-ground pool. Every cleaner here is sold for in-ground pools.
- A variable-speed pump kept at its lowest setting, unless the cleaner states low-flow operation - and even then, check it runs at your usual speed before settling on a schedule.
- Anyone hoping to clean the filter less often. A suction cleaner makes filter maintenance more frequent, not less. If that is the deciding factor, what a robot costs to run is the comparison to read.
