What a salt system actually is
Salt dissolved in the water passes through a cell containing electrified plates. Electrolysis splits the sodium chloride and produces chlorine, which sanitizes the water and then reverts to salt. The salt is not consumed - it cycles.
So the sanitizer in a saltwater pool is chlorine, the same chlorine as in any other pool. What changes is that the pool makes it continuously instead of you adding it, and the concentration of salt in the water is low enough that most people describe it as feeling softer rather than salty.

The cell is the whole economics
A salt generator cell has a finite life. The plates degrade with use, output falls, and eventually the cell has to be replaced - and a replacement cell is the single largest recurring cost of owning a salt pool.
That is the number to find before you convert, and it is the one the sales conversation tends to skip. Amortize it across the years you expect from it and compare that against what you currently spend on tablets. That comparison is the honest version of 'salt pools are cheaper to run'.
pH goes up, and that is structural
Chlorine generation is an alkaline process, so a salt pool's pH drifts upward continuously. That is the reverse of a trichlor tablet pool, which drifts down.

Stabilizer matters more, not less
A generator produces chlorine at a steady, modest rate. Without stabilizer, ultraviolet light destroys it as fast as the cell can make it, and the generator runs flat out achieving nothing.
HTH's stabilizer page gives 60 to 80 ppm as the saltwater target - higher than the 30 to 50 ppm for tablet pools, precisely because the supply is steady rather than dosed. This is the most common thing new salt pool owners get wrong.
About the salt itself
- **Pool-grade only.** Anti-caking agents and iodine stain. Pool salt has neither, and it costs very little more.
- **Grain size is the only other variable.** Finer dissolves faster, which matters when commissioning a system or after a heavy rain dilution, and not at all for a routine top-up.
- **It is not consumed.** You top up for splash-out, backwashing and rain dilution, not on a schedule.
- **Wait a full day before trusting a salinity reading** after a large addition. Salt dissolves slowly and a same-day reading reads low.

Grain size is the difference between salt products. Finer dissolves faster; coarser is cheaper per pound and takes longer to disperse.

Every strip and every DPD color-match kit asks you to judge a shade. FAS-DPD asks you to count drops until a color disappears, which removes the judgment entirely.
That matters most exactly where the cheap methods fail: above about 5 ppm free chlorine, color-match scales saturate and read 'high' for anything from 6 ppm to 30 ppm. When you are shocking, that is the range you are in.
It also measures combined chlorine separately, which is the reading that tells you whether the shock worked or the pool needs another round.
