This is a different page from the kit list

The six-tool starter set is on pool cleaning kit essentials, and it treats the vacuum head as one item among six. This page is about that item and the hose it connects to, because those two parts are where a manual vacuum succeeds or fails.

If you are buying your first set of tools, start on the kit page. If you already own a pole and the vacuuming is frustrating, the problem is almost certainly on this one.

How we compared them

  1. Surface compatibility. A head safe on a vinyl liner and a head that cleans plaster well are not always the same product, and the listing usually says which it is.
  2. Published dimensions. Width decides coverage per pass; weight decides whether it stays down. Most listings publish neither, so the ones that do stand out.
  3. Hose fit. 1.25 in or 1.5 in, and whether the head accepts both. This is the specification people get wrong most often.
  4. Swivel. A swivel cuff on the hose and a swivel handle on the head are what stop the rig twisting itself off the floor.
  5. What it is not for. Manual vacuum hose is not robot hose, and the good listings say so.

We have not run these side by side in a pool. Every figure below is the maker's own, read off the live listings on 2026-09-27, and where a listing publishes nothing the table says so.

Two heads here publish a width and one publishes a weight. That is the state of this category: it is a commodity product sold on photographs, so the listings that print numbers are the ones you can actually compare.

Wheels, brushes or neither

The underside of the head decides what surface it suits, and getting this wrong is how liners get marked.

  • Wheels. Roll easily and keep the head moving over plaster and fiberglass. Sepetrel states eight low-friction wheels and names vinyl and fiberglass as safe surfaces; the concern on a liner is always the hardness of the wheel rather than the wheel itself.
  • Brushes. A brushed head agitates as it vacuums, which suits plaster and gunite. On a vinyl liner an aggressive brush is unnecessary and, over years, marks it.
  • Smooth weighted bodies. Nothing to catch or scuff, which is why the liner-specific heads are built this way. They need the weight instead, or they float.

Weight is the specification nobody publishes and everyone notices. A head that is too light rides up off the floor as soon as the suction pulls the hose; a head that is too heavy is hard to steer at the end of a 16 ft pole. Sepetrel's stated 4.2 lb is at the heavy end and reads as commercial-grade rather than domestic.

The hose is the part that decides everything

A vacuum head can only work if the hose reaches, stays unkinked and does not fight you. Three things matter, in this order.

  • Diameter. 1.5 in is the in-ground standard and 1.25 in is common above ground. Buy the hose your skimmer and head take, or a head that states both - two of the heads here do.
  • Swivel cuff. Both hoses here state one. Without it the hose twists as you work and eventually corkscrews, which pulls the head sideways.
  • Construction. Both state spiral-wound EVA that is crush-resistant and UV-resistant. U.S. Pool Supply adds an abrasion-resistant outer shell and is the only one of the two claiming maximum flow rate, which is the claim that actually bears on suction along a 40 ft run.

Priming, and the air problem

  1. Attach the head to the pole and the hose to the head, then lower the whole rig into the water.
  2. Fill the hose by holding the free end in front of a return jet until water runs out of it steadily. A hose full of air pushes air into the pump, which loses prime.
  3. With the hose still full, plug it into the skimmer - through the vacuum plate if your skimmer has one, or into the suction port.
  4. Vacuum slowly. Fast passes stir fine silt into suspension and you end up filtering what you were trying to collect.
  5. If the water is very dirty, vacuum to waste rather than through the filter - the flocculant page covers when that is the right call.

The picks

Sepetrel Commercial Grade Pool Vacuum Head with Wheels, 14 in

Top pick - Covering ground on a big floor

Sepetrel Commercial Grade Pool Vacuum Head with Wheels, 14 in

The widest head here with published weight and wheel count, and the only one stating a swivel handle - which is what stops you lifting the head every time you change direction.

The published figure

Listing states 14 in wide, 4.2 lb, 8 low-friction wheels, a 180-degree swivel handle, and fits 1.5 in and 2 in hoses

Sepetrel publishes the numbers the category usually hides: 14 inches wide, 4.2 lb, eight low-friction wheels, ABS and metal construction.

The swivel handle turns 180 degrees left and right, which the listing says lets you change direction without lifting or losing contact. On a long pool that is the difference between vacuuming and wrestling.

It states compatibility with 1.5 in and 2 in hoses and most 1.25 in telescopic poles, and names vinyl and fiberglass among the surfaces its wheels suit.

What it does well

  • Publishes width, weight and wheel count
  • 180-degree swivel handle stated
  • Stated safe on vinyl and fiberglass

What it costs you

  • 4.2 lb is heavy to steer at the end of a long pole
  • 14 in is too wide for tight steps and corners
  • Third-party seller, so delivery varies

Skip it if your pool is small or full of steps and benches. A narrower head turns in places this one cannot.

U.S. Pool Supply 11 in Weighted Butterfly Pool Vacuum Head

Pick 2 - Vinyl liners and tight spots

U.S. Pool Supply 11 in Weighted Butterfly Pool Vacuum Head

The narrow, cheap, liner-safe head. It fits where the 14 inch heads cannot and costs less than a tank of gas.

The published figure

Listing states an 11 in weighted butterfly head with a swivel connection accepting 1.25 in and 1.5 in hose, stated ideal for vinyl-lined pools

The listing states a swivel head connection that accepts both 1.25 in and 1.5 in hose, which matters because above-ground pools commonly run the smaller size and inground pools the larger.

It is stated as ideal for vinyl-lined pools and weighted to keep contact with the floor. Brushless, smooth-bodied heads are the safe choice on a liner; aggressive brushes are for plaster.

At 11 inches it covers less per pass than a 14 inch head, which is the trade for getting into corners, steps and the narrow end of a kidney shape.

What it does well

  • Accepts both 1.25 in and 1.5 in hose
  • Stated ideal for vinyl liners
  • Cheapest head here by a wide margin

What it costs you

  • 11 in covers less ground per pass
  • No published weight
  • Plastic construction at this price is a consumable

Skip it if you have a large plaster pool. A wider head with a stiffer body finishes the floor faster.

FibroPool Pool Vacuum Head, weighted flexible, 14.4 in

Pick 3 - Vinyl liners

FibroPool Pool Vacuum Head, weighted flexible, 14.4 in

Thermoplastic body and urethane wheels, which is the combination that does not mark a vinyl liner.

The published figure

14.4 in thermoplastic head with urethane wheels and a 1.5 in hose port

Metal-framed vacuum heads and hard plastic wheels are what put gray scuff lines on a light vinyl liner.

Urethane wheels are softer and do not transfer marks, which is why they cost more.

14.4 inches is narrower than the big kit heads, so it takes more passes but fits between steps and ladder legs.

What it does well

  • Urethane wheels will not mark a vinyl liner
  • Narrow enough for tight areas around steps

What it costs you

  • Narrower means more passes on an open floor
  • Hose sold separately

Skip it if you have a plaster pool and a wide open floor — a wider head is simply faster.

Swimline HydroTools Manual Vacuum Head

Pick 4 - Replacing a worn head

Swimline HydroTools Manual Vacuum Head

The replacement head on its own, for when the hose is fine and the head has gone.

The published figure

Weighted flexible head for in-ground and above-ground pools

Vacuum heads wear out well before hoses do — the brush strip goes, then the wheels.

A flexible weighted head suits both flat above-ground floors and the transition into a deep end.

Check your hose cuff size before ordering. 1.25 in and 1.5 in are both common and they are not interchangeable.

What it does well

  • Cheap replacement rather than a whole new kit
  • Fits both pool types

What it costs you

  • Hose not included
  • Cuff sizing catches people out

Skip it if you do not already own a working hose — buy the kit instead.

Poolmaster Manual Pool Vacuum Hose, 40 ft x 1.5 in

Pick 5 - The default inground hose

Poolmaster Manual Pool Vacuum Hose, 40 ft x 1.5 in

The plain answer for most inground pools, and the only hose here that tells you what it is not for.

The published figure

Listing states 40 ft x 1.5 in spiral-wound EVA with a swivel cuff, made in USA, and states it is not for robotic cleaners

Poolmaster states spiral-wound EVA construction - flexible, crush-resistant, UV-resistant and chemical-resistant - with a swivel cuff to reduce twisting while you work.

The listing is unusually direct about fit: measure before you buy, confirm diameter and length, and it is explicitly NOT for automatic or robotic cleaners. Those use their own hose.

40 ft suits most residential inground pools. The rule is that the hose has to reach the farthest point from the skimmer, and a hose at full stretch drags the head off the floor.

What it does well

  • Swivel cuff stated, which is what stops kinking
  • States clearly it is for manual vacuuming only
  • Sold and shipped by Amazon

What it costs you

  • 40 ft is short for a large or awkwardly shaped pool
  • EVA hoses hold their coil memory for the first few uses
  • 1.5 in only - above-ground pools on 1.25 in fittings need an adapter

Skip it if your pool needs more than 40 ft to reach the far corner. Buy the length, not the discount.

U.S. Pool Supply Pool Vacuum Hose, 40 ft x 1.5 in

Pick 6 - The fullest published spec of the two

U.S. Pool Supply Pool Vacuum Hose, 40 ft x 1.5 in

The hose that publishes the most about how it is built, and the only one here that makes a claim about flow rather than only about construction.

The published figure

Listing states 1.5 in (38 mm) x 40 ft (12 m) spiral-wound EVA, a kink-free swivel cuff, an abrasion-resistant outer shell, and crush, UV and chemical resistance

The listing states that one end swivels and the other does not, and tells you which goes where: the swivel cuff onto the vacuum head, the fixed end into the skimmer or pump inlet. That is the detail people get wrong, and getting it wrong is why a hose corkscrews.

U.S. Pool Supply claims maximum flow rate and proper full suction. That is a claim rather than a figure - no hose on this page publishes a bore diameter or a flow number - but flow is what decides whether 40 ft of hose still lifts sand at the far end.

The construction detail is the fullest stated here: spiral-wound EVA, crush-resistant, UV and chemical resistant, with an abrasion-resistant outer shell. The outer shell is the part that matters on a rough concrete deck, which is where hoses actually die.

What it does well

  • The most construction detail stated of any hose here
  • Kink-free swivel cuff, with the listing stating which end goes where
  • Abrasion-resistant outer shell stated, for dragging across a deck

What it costs you

  • Costs more than the Poolmaster at the same 40 ft length
  • No warranty term stated
  • 1.5 in only - above-ground pools on 1.25 in fittings need an adapter

Skip it if you want the cheapest hose that does the job. The Poolmaster is the same length for less and states the same swivel cuff.

POOLWHALE Pool Vacuum Head and 36 ft Hose Kit

Pick 7 - The complete manual kit

POOLWHALE Pool Vacuum Head and 36 ft Hose Kit

Head and hose together, which avoids the classic mistake of buying a head and discovering the hose is the expensive part.

The published figure

Weighted vacuum head with wheels and 1.5 in x 36 ft hose

Manual vacuuming is slow, and it is also the only method that gets exactly where you point it. Nothing automatic clears one stubborn corner as reliably.

36 ft of hose covers most residential pools from a single skimmer. Measure from your skimmer to the far corner and add a third.

A weighted head with wheels stays down and rolls rather than skating, which is the difference between vacuuming and stirring.

What it does well

  • Head and hose matched, so nothing else to buy
  • Weighted with wheels, so it tracks rather than lifts
  • Works with any standard telescopic pole

What it costs you

  • Manual labor
  • Debris goes through the pump basket and filter

Skip it if you already own a robot and only ever vacuum a small area — a handheld is enough.

ARLBA Telescoping Pool Pole, 16.5 ft, 4-section aluminum

Pick 8 - Reaching the middle of a wide pool

ARLBA Telescoping Pool Pole, 16.5 ft, 4-section aluminum

Wall thickness is the specification that decides whether a pole survives the season, and this one publishes it.

The published figure

16.5 ft extended, 1.30 mm anodized aluminum, four sections with three locking cams, 1-1/4 in end

Every net, brush and vacuum head on this site attaches to a pole, and the pole is where people economize and then replace twice.

1.3 mm wall thickness is the published figure to compare against. Thin-walled poles flex at full extension, and the flex is what eventually kinks them permanently at the joint.

16.5 feet reaches the middle of most residential pools from the edge. A 12 ft pole does not, on anything wider than about 20 feet.

What it does well

  • Publishes wall thickness, 1.30 mm, which most pole listings do not
  • 16.5 ft reaches the center of a typical residential pool
  • Standard fitting works with every net and brush on this site

What it costs you

  • Four sections flex more at full extension than two
  • Aluminum at this length is heavy overhead

Skip it if you own a small above-ground pool you can reach across. A 12 ft two-section pole is stiffer and lighter.

When a head and hose is the wrong purchase

  • You vacuum more than once a week for months. That is the arithmetic that justifies a robot - it is worked through on are robotic pool cleaners worth it.
  • Your pump is already struggling. A manual vacuum adds restriction; a pool with marginal flow will lose prime rather than clean.
  • The debris is leaves by the bagful. A manual head sends all of it into the pump basket - best pool vacuum for leaves covers the better options.
  • You have no pole. The pole is the most expensive part of a manual set to buy badly, and the kit page explains why.

Questions people actually ask

What size pool vacuum hose do I need?
1.5 in for most in-ground pools and 1.25 in on many above-ground ones - check the skimmer and the head. For length, measure from the skimmer to the farthest corner and add the depth there: a 16 x 32 ft pool with a corner skimmer needs about 42 ft, so a 40 ft hose is just short.
What vacuum head is safe for a vinyl liner?
A smooth, weighted head without aggressive brushes. The U.S. Pool Supply butterfly head and the FibroPool weighted flexible head both state vinyl liners specifically, and Sepetrel names vinyl among the surfaces its wheels suit.
Why does my vacuum head float off the floor?
Either the head is too light for the suction, or the hose is at full stretch and lifting it. Weighted heads solve the first; buying enough hose solves the second, and a hose at its limit is the more common cause.
How do you prime a pool vacuum hose?
Lower the rig in, then hold the free end of the hose in front of a return jet until water runs out steadily. Plug it into the skimmer while it is still full. A hose with air in it pushes that air into the pump and loses prime.
Can I use a manual vacuum hose with a robot?
No. Poolmaster states it on the listing: manual hose is for a manual head and pole, not for automatic or robotic cleaners, which use their own hose.
Is a wider vacuum head better?
Faster on open floor, worse everywhere else. A 14 in head covers ground quickly; an 11 in head fits between the steps, into corners and along the narrow end of a shaped pool. Pool shape decides this more than pool size.
